I'm wondering why is it that there are no new drivers available for my computer? The last driver update for my GPU is 2020! Meanwhile I go to Intel's site and they released a driver update as recently as March of this year.
I know my computer is an older model, but it's pretty frustrating. I'm trying to do a good job maintaining my machine since I invested money into buying this customizable model. I read that I might be able to install the newer driver myself, but I'm just concerned I'll create a bigger problem for myself. While I'm willing to learn whatever I need to learn to keep my computer running properly, I don't want to create a problem that requires fixing all because I didn't know what I was doing.
Maybe I'm overthinking this and I'm ranting a bit. But like I said, I won't want to create a problem by trying to do something good and it turns out badly because I didn't get enough facts.

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Thank you for your thoughtful question -you're not overthinking this at all. In fact, it’s great that you’re taking ownership of your system’s maintenance. So, let’s break this down:
Why No New Drivers on HP’s Website?
Your HP Pavilion Gaming 790-0050t CTO is an older, customizable desktop (released around 2018–2019). HP typically supports models with OEM driver updates for about 4 years from launch. After that period, HP stops publishing newer drivers, even if Intel, Nvidia, or AMD continue releasing updates.
This doesn't mean your system is necessarily obsolete -just that HP's support site won't show anything newer.
Can You Install Drivers Directly from Intel (or Nvidia/AMD)?
Yes -and in most cases, you absolutely should. Here’s how it works:
For Intel Components (like iGPU, Chipset, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth):
Use the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant (iDSA).
It will scan your system and safely offer newer, validated drivers, even for older HP platforms.
For Dedicated Graphics (e.g., Nvidia GTX/RTX GPUs):
Go directly to https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
Use your GPU model (e.g. GTX 1050 Ti, RTX 2080, GTX 1660, GTX 1660 Ti, RTX 2060) and download the latest Game Ready Driver.- For AMD cards (e.g. AMD Radeon RX 580) go directly to Drivers and Support for Processors and Graphics (amd.com).
Two AMD options:
Auto-Detect Tool:
Use AMD's auto-installer to detect your GPU or chipset and install the latest drivers.Manual Selection:
If you know your hardware (e.g., Radeon RX 580, Ryzen 5 5600G, B550 chipset), you can manually select and download the right drivers. These are safe to use in most cases, even on HP systems. Just be sure to create a system restore point first if your PC came with custom HP software or thermal controls -just in case.
These drivers are often more up-to-date than HP’s versions, and both Intel, AMD and Nvidia support backward compatibility carefully.
Will It Break Anything?
In almost all cases, no -especially if you:
Stick to official drivers from Intel/AMD/Nvidia
Avoid forcing installs of incompatible drivers
OEMs such as HP may do custom tweaks, but those tweaks are rarely essential unless you rely on HP-specific utilities (e.g., HP Command Center). You can always roll back a driver in Device Manager if you encounter any issues.
What You Can Do Right Now:
Back up your system (just in case).
Use Intel Driver & Support Assistant for chipset, graphics, Wi-Fi, etc.
Visit Intel/AMD/Nvidia’s website to update your dedicated GPU (if applicable).
Keep Windows Update active -it also pulls reliable driver updates from Microsoft’s catalog.
Final Thoughts:
Your HP 790-0050t may not get new drivers from HP anymore, but with a little DIY effort, it can stay current and secure. You’re doing the right thing by asking questions -and you’ve got a very capable machine that still has life left in it -and is actually highly upgradable! (Let me know if you are interested in upgrading your system)
Let me know if you’d like help identifying the exact hardware or walking through a driver update -I'd happy to assist.
Kind Regards,
