I want to know the safest way to find duplicate files on my computer and remove unnecessary copies without losing important data. I am looking for a reliable method or duplicate file finder that can identify duplicate photos, videos, documents, and other files, let me review them before deletion, and help me safely free up storage space.

Hi  @KuldeepTech

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out. I completely understand that managing duplicate files can be important when you're trying to free up storage space while making sure your personal files remain safe.

To help you better, could you kindly provide:

  • The exact HP product model or product number of your computer?
  • Are you seeing a storage space warning, performance issue, or simply trying to organize files?
  • Have you already used any duplicate file finder software? If so, which one?
  • Are the duplicates mainly photos, videos, documents, or a mix of different file types?

In the meantime, here are a few safe steps you can try:

  1. Back up important files first
    • Kindly save important documents, photos, and videos to an external drive or cloud storage before making any changes.
  2. Use File Explorer to identify large folders
    • Open File Explorer and review folders such as Pictures, Downloads, Documents, and Videos for obvious duplicate copies.
  3. Use Windows Storage Settings
    • Go to Settings > System > Storage.
    • Review storage usage and remove unnecessary temporary files.
  4. Review files before deleting
    • If you use a duplicate file finder, make sure it provides a preview option so you can verify files before removal.
    • Avoid automatically deleting all detected duplicates without reviewing them.
  5. Move files to the Recycle Bin first
    • Instead of permanently deleting files, move them to the Recycle Bin initially.
    • This provides an opportunity to restore anything that was removed by mistake.

I hope this helps.
