is it wise to defrag solid state drives

Hi:

When you select the Defragment and Optimize Drives program in W10, it will automatically recognize your drive as a SSD, and it will TRIM the drive instead of defragmenting it.

So it is OK to run that program.

But on older operating systems (XP, Vista, W7) that will not recognize your SSD as a SSD, it will try and defragment it like a regular hard drive, and you never want to defragment a SSD.

A SSD stores data differently than a mechanical hard drive, so defragmenting the drive just shortens its life with unnecessary writing to the drive.
