Microsoft Windows 11

I was trying to enter my password to login to my computer, and it seems that i have forgotten the password to it. And now when i try to enter a different one, it says “ The sign and option is disabled because of failed sign and attempt or repeated shutdown. Use a different sign in option or keep your device powered on for at least two hours and then try again.” What should i do?

Hi @katrina1-_,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are unable to log into your HP desktop all-in-one computer because you have forgotten the password and are seeing a message about the sign-in option being disabled, there are several steps you can take to regain access to your computer. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Wait and Retry

As suggested by the message, leave your device powered on for at least two hours and then try signing in again. This might reset the lockout timer and allow you to attempt entering your password again.

2. Use a Different Sign-In Option

If you have other sign-in options configured (like a PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition), you can try those to log in.

3. Use Password Reset Options

If you use a Microsoft account to log in to your computer, you can reset your password online using another device.

Reset Microsoft Account Password:

  1. Go to the Microsoft password reset page on a different device.
  2. Select "I forgot my password" and follow the prompts to reset your password.
  3. Once reset, use the new password to log into your computer.

4. Use Safe Mode to Access the Built-In Administrator Account

You can try accessing the built-in Administrator account by booting into Safe Mode and then resetting your password.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  1. Restart your computer and press the F8 key repeatedly (or the Shift key + Restart option from the login screen) until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
  2. Select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt".

Use System Restore

If none of the above methods work and you have System Restore enabled, you might be able to restore your computer to a point before the password issue began.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
