HP 27-xa0014 All-In-One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a brand new HP 27-xa0014 All-In-One desktop PC that has almost no extra software installed on it.  The start up HD is a small 256GB SSD, so some other form of file storage is necessary to use the PC.  When I plug any external HDD into any USB port, there is a noticeable intermittent pointer lag that persists until the drive is unplugged from the system.  I have tried a few different USB drives plugged into the USB SS connection; and all of them cause a mouse lag until the external drive is unplugged.

Any ideas on a cause or solution?  There needs to be some additional local storage beyond the small startup SSD.  Cloud based storage is an option but cannot replace a local storage solution.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,  I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant in order to update the USB drivers and system software:

To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.

  1. To open the HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/932/c05040382.jpg.
  2. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
  3. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
  4. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
  5. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
  6. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

And, BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I updated all software and still get the same issue.  And I can find no culprit when reviewing the system performance in task viewer.

I read something online somewhere that the HP bluetooth keyboard/mouse system might be interfering somehow.  I haven't borrowed any corded equipment to check this possibility.  But i really hope it is not the case because I really like the HP keyboard.

I've purchased a bluetooth mouse and found that when a USB external drive is plugged in, it interferes BADLY with the HP wireless USB mouse; making it unusable.  A bluetooth mouse continues to work with an external drive plugged in.

I also found that the HP wireless USB keyboard gets some interference when an external drive is plugged in.  It is effected differently depending on which external USB drive I plug in as well as where the USB drive is positioned in relation to the external USB drive.  If the drives are in front of the AIO computer, the keyboard is GREATLY interfered with.

Additionally I have found that the external drive(s) are somehow disconnected from the system even though they still have power and are still connected to the computer via USB.  Is this a known issue or something that can be rectified somehow?  I cannot keep this new computer if these issues persist.
