After updating BIOS/Windows/HP (everything happened in 1 night) software I cannot select the correct screen resolution on the monitor connected via HDMI. The update happened suddenly on the night of March 13-14, and I have disabled automatic Windows updates, but my HP laptop forced a restart, closing all my programs and performed the update. I created a ticket on HP support, but no one answers the phone, other contact options are only available from 8-17 when I am at work, and at 4 am I got an email that if I do not make contact within 1 business day, you will close my ticket. I am unhappy and cannot work on my laptop.

 

What I tried: I downloaded new monitor and Display Adapter drivers, if that did not help (after restarting) I tried to restore some older ones, it did not help, I also tried to use the Logilink HDMI EDID emulator, and I tried the CRU tool. My monitor is LG 34GL750 but it doesnt matter, because I also tried to connect the laptop to other monitors. I also tried to remove the monitor entries from the registry or roll back the BIOS version, but unfortunately my computer doesnt allow it. In addition, on my HP account I see that my warranty is "ending", although I bought the laptop in January '25, I submitted a ticket to you but no one answered me.

 

Additionaly I have an issue that my laptop is not able to go into "Sleep" mode, but unfortunately this is probably blocked by the BIOS, which has very limited options on HP laptops and I cannot change it.

It seems like you are experiencing issues with screen resolution on external monitors connected via HDMI and sleep mode after recent updates. Here are some steps to try and resolve these problems:

Screen Resolution Issue

Check Windows Display Settings:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select “Display settings”.
  • Under “Multiple displays”, ensure the correct monitor is selected.
  • Adjust the resolution settings and select the recommended option.

Update Graphics Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Drivers and Support page and download the latest graphics driver specifically for your laptop model.
  • Manually reinstall the graphics drivers by following instructions on the HP support page.

Rollback to Previous Drivers:

  • If the issue started after updating drivers, try rolling back to a previous version from Device Manager:
    • Open Device Manager > Display adapters.
    • Right-click your graphics driver > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver.

Sleep Mode Issue

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select “Change plan settings” > “Change advanced power settings.”
  • Ensure sleep settings are properly configured (such as setting “Allow hybrid sleep” and “Sleep after” options)

Update BIOS:

Hibernate Settings:

  • Sometimes, hibernation settings cause sleep issues. Disable hibernation if not needed:
    • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
    • Type powercfg -h off and press Enter.

HP Support Assistant:

  • Use HP Support Assistant to diagnose and resolve issues. This tool provides comprehensive support.

Hi,
First of all, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my issue and providing guidance. It’s great to have some support in dealing with this problem.

 

I’m currently focusing on solving the monitor issue, as it’s seriously preventing me from working (imagine being a graphic designer and not having the correct resolution on a widescreen monitor – no monitor works properly).

I’ve installed the latest graphics drivers and restarted the computer – it didn’t help. I uninstalled the graphics driver, which caused the monitor to not be detected at all, then restarted – no effect. I reinstalled the latest graphics drivers as recommended - still no improvement.

 

Since I realized that the monitor stopped working correctly after a forced BIOS update (which happened despite my update settings being disabled – it happened in the middle of the night, closing all my programs), I followed the recommended instructions. I noticed that I currently have a “too new” BIOS version compared to what’s advised for my model (how is that possible?). I manually installed the recommended BIOS version through Device Manager, restarted twice as instructed, but it didn’t help.

My Windows 11 system still doesn’t detect correct graphic settings for any monitor. I have downloaded the latest drivers for my specific monitor, but I have also tried connecting different monitors and installing/uninstalling the corresponding drivers – no success.

Do you have any other suggestions? Should I consider that I’ve wasted my money on this HP laptop since I’m unable to work with it?

I completely understand your frustration—having a laptop that won’t display properly on an external monitor is a nightmare, especially for a graphic designer. Let’s get to the bottom of this.

 

1. Check Device Manager for Display Issues

Go to Device Manager > Display Adapters and check for warnings (yellow exclamation marks).

Also, under Monitors, see if your external monitor appears.

2. Try an Older Graphics Driver

Since a BIOS update may have changed system behavior, the latest graphics driver might not work correctly with it. Try:

Downloading an older version of your GPU driver from the HP support site for your model.

Uninstalling the current driver in Device Manager > Display Adapters (choose "Delete the driver software for this device").

Restarting and installing the older driver.

3. Reset BIOS Settings

Boot into the BIOS and look for an option to reset to default settings.

Save and exit.

 

4. Try a Different Connection Port or Adapter

If you’re using HDMI, try USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort instead.

Some BIOS updates affect port behavior.

5. Windows Update Conflict?

Check Windows Update > View Update History.

Look for any recent system updates around the time your BIOS was updated.

If a recent Windows update seems related, uninstall it and restart.
