I just bought an hp pavilion desktop 510-p020. I hooked it up to my hp w1907 monitor which is about 7-8 years old. Everything was working fine until I left the system idle. When I returned to the computer the monitor was dark. I hit one of the keys to awaken the computer. Instead the monitor just kept blinking on and off. I tried restarting the computer with the same result. The system itself is starting up so I don't think the modem is the problem. When I click the power button on the display, it turns on for a second then turns off. In the meantime the system startup is progressing. I have tried changing the power cord, checking all the connections, and plugging the display directly into the wall, all with the same result. Anyone have a clue as to what's going on?

Hi @Magicman1433,

Welcome to the HP forums! 🙂 It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand that you need assistance with your desktop computer that does not boot bring up a display on the monitor which keeps flashing. I’ll be delighted to assist you with this. 🙂

Awesome job on diagnosing the issue correctly and trying some basic troubleshooting steps before posting your question. 🙂 Kudos to you for that. 🙂 It is a privilege to work with tech-savvy and technically competent customers like you and we greatly value your business with HP and it is a genuine pleasure to assist you here. 🙂

At the outset, It looks like a hardware issue with the monitor.

You’ve done all the basic troubleshooting steps. Please try to connect the computer to a different monitor if you could get hold of one. That should isolate the issue correctly.

You may need to replace the monitor. Please check with a different monitor locally at Best Buy or Staples, before ordering a replacement. You could visit this link: http://store.hp.com to order another display. You could contact them as well as the phone# is listed on the website.

If it is out of warranty and if service options are still available for the unit, you could get it fixed by contacting HP or by contacting a local technician like Best Buy or Staples.

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Thanks so much for the response! I did in fact hook my system up to a different display and everything worked fine. Since the monitor is old and no longer covered under warranty, I just went out and bought a new one. So far so good...fingers crossed! Thanks again!

As a note. If you're using a HDMI cable with ferrite beads (or choke... the plastic bulbous things on some cables), try a HDMI cable without them. The beads are ways for manufacturers to save money (rather of including more expensive properly sheilded cables). I replaced the cables that came with both my Pavilion monitors and the monitors stopped flashing. The ferrite is supposed to turn noise into heat, and they were burning with these monitors! Burning enough that the low energy requirement of these monitors require simply was not being met.
