Jerry,

Followed the directions for using Microsoft System Restore... but when i got to the System Protection tab, the System Restore option was "grayed" out and not available.  The Windows C Drive indicated that "Protection" was off, which i believe is why restore is not available.  Next step?  Configure the drive?  Not sure what that means or what it does... so thought i would ask you.  Thanks, as always.

Thank you for sharing the details.

You have to take the data back up and reinstall the OS.

Jerry,  I created the installation media for Windows 11 on a USB drive...  but have not used it yet.  Can you tell me what it will do and what concerns i should have?  I did a "Show Key" app to make sure i have the windows key for this computer handy.  Just hate to do anything to make the problem worse.  Thanks for all you help.

Thank you for your response.

If you use Windows installation or recovery media, it can reinstall Windows on the PC. Depending on the option you choose during setup/recovery, it may:

  • Refresh or reinstall Windows

  • Keep your personal files in some cases with a Microsoft Refresh option

  • Fully reset the PC to factory-like condition with recovery options, which can remove apps, settings, and personal files.

  • Take time to complete, and in some cases recovery can take quite a while, so it is important to let the process finish before assuming it failed.

Main concerns before using it:

  • Back up your files first. HP strongly emphasizes backup before recovery or restore actions.

  • Recovery media does not back up your pictures, email, or documents. It restores software/system state, not your personal data.

  • If you choose a full recovery/reset, you may lose installed apps and personal files.

  • If the system problem may be caused by a virus, be careful restoring backed-up files afterwards, because infected files can reintroduce the issue.

  • HP guidance suggests trying less invasive options first when available:

    1. System Restore

    2. Refresh

    3. Full HP Recovery

      I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

Well, at this point in time, i have downloaded  the media creation tool on a USB drive.  For some reason, my computer has  not had an issue with the "restart- bugcode ox7c) for the last five days or so... even though i have used it often.  I checked Device Manager and the firmware tab still shows the exclamation point within the triangle... so i don't really know what has changed.  But as the computer seems to working, i  am going to hold off on any refresh or restore options for now.  I want to thank Jerry for helping me through the various testing options and pointing me in the right direction if i need to progress further with the Media tool.  It is nice to know there is help available... and i appreciate the curtesy and patience of your guidance.  If things take a downturn, i may need further assistance... but for now, we will coast along.  Life is grand!

It sounds like you’ve reached a good balance point; the system is stable for now, even though the firmware flag is still visible in Device Manager. That triangle with the exclamation mark is essentially Windows reminding you that something isn’t fully aligned, but since the restart bug hasn’t reappeared, it’s reasonable to hold off on heavier steps like a refresh or restore. Sometimes, intermittent issues settle down after updates or driver adjustments in the background, even if the warning symbol lingers.

We request that you install the HP Support Assistant for the latest driver update:
