HP Pavillion All in One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I just bout an HP All in One Pavillion Desktop so I could work from home and connect my laptop to the Pavillion screen.  Unfortunately I saw from another forum that the HDMI port in the monitor is only an OUT port so I cannot connect the laptop to the desktop screen.

Is there another cable I can purchase to create an HDMI INPUT port on the screen and then connect that to my laptop?  I dont want to have to buy another screen.  Unfortunately the product specs just said HDMI and did not specify OUTPUT.  Sigh.

Thanks!

@robeliz, welcome to the forum.

Your best option is a USB video adapter.  I suggest contacting StarTech's Tech Support for help with choosing the best adapter for your situation.  They make very good, quality products.

For future reference, when requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.

Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Thanks for the tip.  I have been chatting to a StarTech customer support however and they are saying that they dont have a USB Video adapter that can be plugged into the desktop to create an HDMI input.  To be honest he didnt seem that knowledgeable and I had to explain several times what I was after.

Are you aware of anyone who has been able to successfully use an adapter for this purpose?

Thanks again!

Thank you for the additional information, @robeliz.

It would help me if you would provide the full model or product number of your AIO.  It will allow me to review the specifications.

This is exactly what I needed.

Here is a USB adapter that should work for you.  It will make your USB 3.0 port into a HDMI port.  Again, I suggest talking to a StarTech Tech to assure it will work in your situation.

hi.  sorry to ask another question but I was just looking at the product spec of the USB adapter you recommended and it says ... 'The USB32HDE USB 3.0 to HDMI® Adapter turns an available USB 3.0 port into an HDMI output' - are we not looking for something to tuen the USB into an HDMI input?  The issue is that the HP Pavillion all in one does not have an input port which allos me to project the Laptop screen to the desktop screen.  I have a cable that comes out of the laptop already but the problem is really the desktop not having an HDMI input.  Would this cable still work for that?

You are absolutely correct!  I was thinking that you wanted to connect the AIO to another computer with an input.  Here is what was recommended by Brandon at StarTech:

  1. So what they would use is the USB3HDCAP seen here: https://www.startech.com/AV/Converters/Video/usb-3-0-video-capture-device-hdmi-dvi-vga~USB3HDCAP . They would need to install the necessary drivers and software for it and then from there they will be able to view the desktop of the laptop within the included software.

It is a bit expensive, but it should work.  I hope this helps.
