HP E243m

I have an E243m monitor.  The sound is extremely tinny, even after installing the driver upgrade on HP's site.  There seem to be 2 sound output options for the monitor - HP243m or Echo Cancelling Speaker phone, but even disabling one and trying another has the same result. (image below)

The monitor is connected to a laptop - when I use the laptop speakers the sound is fine, so I think it is the monitor not the laptop.  Windows and teams notifications are very tinny and irritating at the moment.  Does anyone have any ideas of a possible solution?

(FWIW, I have another E243m monitor at home connected via Display Port to a desktop PC and the sound is perfect)
