True - the computer must include a fingerprint reader to use that feature with sign-in.

No category Biometric devices in the Device Manager = No fingerprint reader

The fingerprint reader is an OPTION that must be purchased with the computer or added later (see service guide for part(s) and installation procedure).

The little box on your keyboard is perhaps just a plain, blank cover.

True - little covered box is matches keyboard top cover color and looks like a fingerprint reader.

Fingerprint reader

Depending on the model, the fingerprint sensor might be integrated into the top cover / keyboard area.  Check your system’s user manual.

Reminder:  If the system does not have a fingerprint sensor, there might be a "cover plate" in place of the sensor.

If your system does not have a fingerprint sensor and the option is available for your model series, the sensor can be purchased and installed.

Device Manager > Biometric devices > Fingerprint sensor (if listed)

Example Plate - Device Manager > Biometric devices > Fingerprint reader
