w2338h
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

When my computer came back from repair, I have a new hard drive and OS upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8.1

The generic driver they installed does not cut it for  a wide screen like mine. (everything is squashed vertically and stretched horizontally) It does not allow for any resolution not the 4:3 ratio. I tried to find the driver on the Web, but all I can get to are utilities I don't want. How can I get a driver for my HP w2338h monitor?

Thank you

Hi:

You should be able to use the W7 driver by manually installing it.

I have zipped up and attached the driver file below.

Download and unzip the file to its folder.

Do not do anything with the files in the folder.

Go to the device manager, click to expand the Monitors device manager category.

Click on the PnP monitor listed there.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the unzipped driver folder.

Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.

Then restart the PC.

Are you sure it isn't the graphics driver that is missing?

If the graphics driver is missing, under the display adapters device manager category, there will be a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter listed there.

If there is, then that is the cause of your dilemma, not the monitor.

To give you the right graphics driver, I would need to know the full model number or product number of your PC.

Thank you so much. I followed your steps until I got:

The best driver for your device is already installed

Windows has determined the best driver software for your device is up to date.

Generic PnP Monitor

What do I do now?

You're very welcome.

I'm surprised that driver didn't install.

If it won't install, you can try one other step.

Go to the device manager, click to expand the Monitors device manager category.

Click on the PnP monitor listed there.

Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, but this time at the bottom of that window, select the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Click on Have Disk, and browse to the unzipped driver folder>Files>HP_w2338h (setup information file), click Next, and see if the driver installs that way.

If that doesn't work either, unfortunately, I don't have any other ideas for you to try.

Did you check under the display adapters device manager category to see if you need to install the W8.1 graphics driver?

Again...if you see a MIcrosoft Basic Display Adapter listed there, you need to install the applicable graphics driver for your model PC.

It turns out you were right about the graphics driver. I took the computer to the shop where it was built, and they installed the graphics driver for the graphics chipset they had used. Now I have a suitable resolution set for my monitor.

Glad to read that you now have the correct display resolution.

I am still surprised the W7 monitor driver didn't work on W8.1 though.

Oh, well...it's not that big of a deal.

I have an old Dell 17" LCD monitor, and it doesn't have 64 bit drivers, so I have to also have to live with it as a generic PnP monitor.
