HP Chromebase 21.5 inch All-in-One Desktop (2S9W1AV)

I have had my Chromebase for about a year and love it. However, it suddenly won't boot past a black screen that simply says "Something went wrong" I can't use the touchscreen, or bluetooth keyboard/mouse. It only gives me the option to click "advanced options" which brings me to a firmware log or debug info. Otherwise there is no option to powerwash, reset, or anything else. I purchased a USB keyboard with a reset key just to try that but nothing helps. Powering down using the ESC key, reset key, or any combination of key commands on restart does nothing.

Is there a reset hole that I can stick a paperclip into? What are my options? Thank you!

Hi @BrookMagar,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering a challenging issue with your HP Chromebase. Unfortunately, the Chromebase doesn't typically have a physical reset button like some other devices might. However, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Hard Reset: Since you've already tried various key combinations to no avail, try performing a hard reset. To do this, unplug the Chromebase from its power source and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and attempt to power it on again.
  • Recovery Mode: If the hard reset doesn't work, you might need to enter Recovery Mode. To do this, turn off the Chromebase completely, then turn it back on and immediately press and hold down the "Esc" and "Refresh" keys (the circular arrow key) simultaneously. While holding these keys, press the power button once. This should take you to the Recovery Mode screen where you can attempt to reset the device or perform other troubleshooting steps.
  • Chrome OS Recovery: If Recovery Mode doesn't work, you might need to use a Chrome OS recovery image to reinstall the operating system. You'll need access to another computer with internet access and a USB flash drive to create a recovery disk. Follow the instructions provided by Google to create the recovery disk and then boot your Chromebase from it to reinstall Chrome OS.

I hope one of these steps helps resolve the issue with your Chromebase!

Take care and have a good day.

How do I boot my system from a flash drive?

HP Recommended

Hi @BrookMagar

Thank you for your response,

To boot your HP Chromebase All-in-One from a flash drive, you'll need to follow these steps.

  • Prepare Your Flash Drive: Ensure that your flash drive is properly formatted and contains the necessary bootable files. You might need to create a bootable USB drive with the appropriate operating system or recovery tools.
  • Insert the Flash Drive: Insert the bootable flash drive into one of the USB ports on your HP Chromebase All-in-One.
  • Access the Boot Menu: Turn on or restart your Chromebase. As it boots up, immediately start pressing the appropriate key to access the boot menu. The key you need to press may vary depending on your device model, but it's often one of the function keys (F1, F2, F10, etc.), the Esc key, or the Del key. Refer to your device's manual or HP's support documentation for the specific key.
  • Select the Flash Drive: Once you're in the boot menu, you should see a list of bootable devices. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to the USB flash drive option and press Enter to select it.
  • Boot from the Flash Drive: Your Chromebase should now boot from the flash drive. Follow the on-screen instructions to initiate the recovery or powerwash process.
  • Follow Recovery/Powerwash Instructions: Depending on the purpose of booting from the flash drive, you'll either initiate the recovery process to reinstall the Chrome OS or perform a powerwash to reset the device to its factory settings. Follow the prompts provided by the recovery or powerwash tool to complete the process.
  • Remove the Flash Drive: Once the recovery or powerwash process is complete, remove the flash drive from the USB port.
  • Restart Your Chromebase: After completing the recovery or powerwash, restart your Chromebase to boot into the newly installed or reset Chrome OS.

Following these steps should allow you to boot your HP Chromebase All-in-One from a flash drive and perform the desired recovery or powerwash operation.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
