I have been using my new Envy All-in-one for two months.
All of a sudden, this message pops up on my desktop after a start up:
HP Display Control X
Warning
HP Display Control Service needs to be
updated. Please update using the link below:
[edit]
Is this from HP?
If so, what am I supposed to do next?

Hello
It seems that the link has been deleted by moderation!
it is likely, that it is not an Hp link therefore!
If in doubt, do not click, the drivers should only be downloaded from the hp site:

I have the same issue, a screenshot is below. I ran a scan with McAfee and it didn't find anything and this is still popping up when I log on to my computer.

HP Display Control Warning in a black screen states:
HP Display Control Service needs to be
updated. Please update using the link below:
https://www.portrait.com/dtune/hps/enu/index/html
This error keeps appearing on my desktop when I boot up.
I ran everything Norton 360 has to offer on it. No success. Norton Power Eraser found a file on C: "08419F73.exe" that they did not have enough information to know if this item is unsafe.
I downloaded and installed all of the HP drivers and firmware for my new machine. No success.
This is very frustrating.

Hello all, I just finished my chat with the HP tech and it IS a legitimate HP link that came out with the last Windows 10 update. He was really nice and took care of installing the drivers for me, there were 2 of them, and it wasn't a big deal.
HP/MS might want to reconsider what they named the link, LOL! Good Luck!

Anti-phishing efforts are of no use when companies insist on using links to third party web sites. This update sends me to "portrait.com". Without asking I have no idea if it's a legitimate location.
ALL HP updates should be from an hp.com URL, customers should not have to guess whether some third party location is legitimate or not. Just putting an HP logo on the screen is not enough, anybody can do that.

Have a similar problem. The HP display control has stopped working, no more reduced blue light mode etc. Clicking on the link opens a window on the taskbar, and that's it. And it no longer allows me to adjust the brightness of my screen using the keypad, or in the settings. I tried the download, after checking it's source, and nothing. So I am left with a monitor that the brightness cannot be adjusted (and it's really bright).
Or and I have given up on the touch screen working again. Computer is only 14 months old. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/touch-screen-stopped-working/m-p/73654...

Yes, it was very frustrating, time consuming and very unnecessary.
It turns out that is came with the last Microsoft Windows 10 update.
And it also turns out the it is a legitimate HP product from a third party.
The only way we were able to make the black screen stop coming up with every restart was to download drivers with the same name from HP driver download page.
That did in fact take care of the problem.
Thanks,

hello I gave this answer
then i did some research and answered another topic here:

But no news, this software is well known to HP!
It is not 100% necessary software, you can uninstall it if you do not want to use it!
Windows tools, and graphics drivers are generally sufficient
