Hello I have a HP EliteDesk 800 G3 - Intel Core i7 7700 / 16GB DDR4 / 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD and I have just added the AMD RX580 8GB, problem is everytime I start a game the pc black screens, the GPU is new out the box and the PSU is 500 watt... question is it the PSU can't handle the power draw from the GPU, I've no idea if its the original PSU if so may be a bit old. Can I replace it with a generic 750 PSU and is there an adaptor available to connect it to the MOBO. Thanks

@HipHopGuineaPig,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

It sounds like you've got a great setup with your HP EliteDesk 800 G3 and the AMD RX 580 8GB! However, the black screen issue when starting a game is most likely due to your PSU being underpowered or too old to handle the additional load from the new GPU. Let me break it down for you:

Possible Cause:

The AMD RX 580 is a power-hungry GPU.  Even though its TDP is listed at 150-watt, this card consumes about 185-watt under load, and when combined with the rest of your system, the total power draw could exceed the 500-watt PSU's capabilities -especially if the PSU is aging or if it's the original unit. Over time, PSUs lose efficiency and can struggle under heavy loads.

Possible Solution #1: Upgrade the PSU:

Your HP EliteDesk can only be powered by an HP-proprietary power supply, and as of yet, there are no ATX power adapters available in order to replace your PSU with an industry standard 750-watt unit.

  1. Assuming you got the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 MT/TWR model:

    • There is an HP 650-watt power supply that may be compatible with your PC and has HP part number: L57253-003 / L36049-003.  This card is available online, such as eBay.

Possible Solution #2: Change your GPU:

  1. Consider a graphics card with a substantially lower TDP, such as an RTX 4060:

    • The RTX 4060 cards are listed with a 115-watt TDP and offer a heck of a lot more performance than an RX 580.  If interested, choose a smaller-sized (dual fan) card, such as this example.

Kind Regards,

Thanks for the reply, watched a few videos on youtube and it seems a common complaint along with hp's mobo connectors lol One guy searched and found an adaptor so it could take any generic psu which bridges from 24 pin on the psu to the 6 pin the board needs and it actually worked 😮 Heres the part ebay link 24 pin to 6 hp mobo 6 pin

@HipHopGuineaPig,

That adapter does not work for the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 platforms.

As @DGroves mentioned regarding your platform, and I quote: "as i pointed out, no adapter/schematics  exists for this model pwr supply/motherboard and a wrong guess will result in a blown supply/fried motherboard" -end quote.

not sure but i believe the HP PA-5501-2HA....... 500 watt supply is compatible with the 800 G3 systems which were only offered by HP with the 180/230 watt units

it should also work in the HP 480 280 288 680 800 600 400 G3 G4 24BB models

@DGroves,

The OP believes that the referenced ATX power supply adapter would work on an HP EliteDesk 800 G3.

No, it doesn't.

you are correct, at this time nobody makes a adapter cable for the 6/7 pin 12volt only power supplies

which is why i referenced a replacement HP 6/7 pin compatible supply with higher wattage

Your 500W PSU might be too weak or old for the RX 580, causing black screen crashes. Since the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 has a proprietary 6-pin motherboard connector, you can’t use a standard PSU without an adapter.

Solution:

Upgrade to a 750W PSU (Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, etc.).
Buy a "24-pin to 6-pin HP PSU adapter" for compatibility.
✔ Ensure the PSU has an 8-pin PCIe cable for the RX 580.
