HP Envy 23 second display

So I'm trying to connect a second monitor to my desktop, but I'm having issues.

I'm using a USB to HDMI converter as there is no HDMI output on my computer, and it works in that the screen is mirrored on the second monitor, but when i got to devices>project, it says there are no displays connected. It seems the problem is that windows is recognizing it as a speaker rather than a second display.

Any ideas how I can fix this?
