Recently HP Inc. SoftwareComponent Driver Update (1.85.4368.0) was downloaded to my desktop via a forced Microsoft update that cannot be uninstalled. As long as the computer is powered up, repeated and unsuccessful attempts fail to install. I have an LG monitor and have never used nor do I want to use this display driver or service. Any help in me being able to stop the repeated unsuccessful installation would be greatly appreciated.

You're very welcome.

I just got that update this morning when I turned on my HP notebook PC ~5 minutes ago.

It shows up under the advanced options W11 update section > Optional updates.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to run the Microsoft Hide Windows update utility that I zipped up and attached below.

When you run the file it will check for Windows updates pending to be installed.

When it finishes, check the box to hide the HP Inc. SoftwareComponent Driver Update (1.85.4368.0) trying to install.

The utility will run again and report that the problem is 'Fixed.'

Close out of the utility, restart the PC, and you should be able to clear it from Windows update if it is still there.

Normally, you have to click on 'Retry' a couple of times.

It is not a display driver, but it is a service.

You should be able to roll back the driver if it installed from the following location:

Control Panel->Device Manager->Software components->HP Application Enabling Services

Thank you Paul for your help.

The show and hide app only noted that there were no hidden updates and were no updates to hide. On my reliability report I receive as many as 40 entries a day saying: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: HP Display Control Service. Product Version: 5.3.72.0. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Portrait Displays, Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603. The warnings state: HP Display Control Service,   un successful application installation.

You're very welcome.

The only other suggestion I can offer would be to try this:

In the search icon, type msconfig, go to the Startup tab, find "HP Display Control" or "HPDC_Service," disable it, then restart the PC.

Thanks again for your help. Nothing I have attempted has worked. It looks like one day I'll have to to do a clean install to correct the issue.

Sorry, that didn't work either.

Hi:

I just came across this recently posted new solution to the problem if you want to give it a try:

You should probably check it out for yourself first, but I think you'll be able to claim me as a dependent when you file your 2026 return! I found and downloaded the update.
