I don't know what is correct but the only thing on that box is that DVI has no signal. The VGA is active. The monitor has a power cord and another cord goes to computer (is that one for video ?) But none of the connections were changed. The monitor has never done this before. I did perform a system restore earlier but the monitor worked after that. I'm not aware of any other changes that occurred. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues with the monitor not waking up from sleep. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.
Splendid effort and fabulous description of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. You are a valued HP customer and it is paramount to assist you here. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Have you tried to update the drivers either from HP support website or from the manufacturer's website?
Have you tried to update the Bios on your Computer?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Perform a Hard reset on the Monitor:
Cycle the power on the monitor as follows:
-
Turn off the monitor. The power light on the monitor should be off. Leave the computer turned on.
-
Unplug the power cord.
-
Wait 5 seconds.
-
Plug in the power cord.
-
Press the power button on the monitor to turn on the monitor.
Next thing, I would suggest here is to Uninstall the display drivers from device manager and then update the drivers:
Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand display adapters>then select the display drivers that are listed and right-click on it and uninstall the drivers.
Check the box that states delete the software for this device.
Now restart the computer and then update the Bios, Chipset and graphics card drivers on your PC from the support website.
Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.
Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.
Alternatively, you can go through the steps suggested in the support document for - HP and Compaq Flat Panel Monitors - Flat Panel Monitor Displays Message about No Signal, Signal out ...
