I want to install a 2nd monitor, to extend my current screen, but my HP does not seem to detect the second monitor when I connect the HDMI cord. I'm not sure if it's even possible with my current version of computer. I would appreciate some assistance if possible

Hi @Jimitoh,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Adding a second monitor to extend your screen is a common setup and should be possible with most modern computers, including HP computers. If your HP computer is not detecting the second monitor when you connect it via HDMI, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Check the Hardware Connections:
- Make sure both ends of the HDMI cable are securely connected to the computer and the second monitor.
- Ensure that the second monitor is powered on and set to the correct input source (HDMI).
Try a Different HDMI Port:
- Some HP computers have multiple HDMI ports. Try connecting the HDMI cable to a different HDMI port on your computer to rule out a port issue.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Outdated or incompatible graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP support website and download the latest graphics drivers for your specific computer model.
Adjust Display Settings:
- Right-click on your desktop and select "Display settings" or "Screen resolution."
- Under the "Multiple displays" section, make sure "Extend these displays" is selected.
- You can also try clicking the "Detect" button to see if your computer can find the second monitor.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure that your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, Windows updates include fixes for display-related issues.
Try a Different Cable:
- If you have access to another HDMI cable, try using it to rule out the possibility of a faulty cable.
Reboot Your Computer:
- Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware detection issues.
BIOS/UEFI Settings (Advanced):
- In some cases, certain BIOS/UEFI settings may affect the detection of additional monitors. Check your computer's BIOS/UEFI settings for options related to display or graphics and ensure they are configured correctly.
Graphics Card Compatibility (Advanced):
- If your computer has a dedicated graphics card, ensure that it supports multiple displays. Some older or budget graphics cards may not support dual monitors.
Check the Second Monitor on Another Computer:
- If possible, connect the second monitor to another computer to ensure it is functioning correctly. This will help you determine if the issue lies with the monitor itself.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that your computer's hardware may not support dual monitors, but this is unlikely for most modern HP computers
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
