I have an old monitor HP v185e with VGA support. My desktop which has a Ryzen 5 5600g with a gigabyte b550m ds3h which has only one hdmi, dvi, dp ports respectively and via hdmi to vga convertor I tried connecting it to my monitor but it shows input signal out of range. I tried with 1366x 768 resolution and all other resolutions and every single resolution tested was at a frequency of 59hz or 60hz. But result was still the same. I don't want to throw away this monitor yet and want to use this as a secondary screen and I need help regarding how I can connect it. Please Help!

Hi @pekker69
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for laying that out so clearly—it’s genuinely frustrating to see “Input Signal Out of Range” when you’ve already tried multiple resolutions and refresh rates. You deserve to keep using your HP v185e monitor, and I want to help you make that happen.
Here’s a structured approach to get your VGA-only monitor working with your modern setup:
Why You're Seeing “Input Signal Out of Range”
- The HDMI to VGA converter may be sending a signal format or timing that the HP v185e can't interpret.
- The monitor supports 1366×768 at 60Hz, but it’s sensitive to timing standards (CVT vs. GTF vs. DMT).
- Windows may default to a resolution or refresh rate during boot that’s incompatible with the monitor.
Steps to Resolve the Issue
Boot with Only the VGA Monitor Connected
- Disconnect all other displays.
- Connect the HDMI-to-VGA converter and boot the PC.
- If the signal fails, proceed to Safe Mode.
Force Compatible Resolution via Safe Mode
- Boot into Safe Mode:
- Hold Shift while clicking Restart → Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart → Press 4 for Safe Mode.
- Once in Safe Mode, go to Display Settings → Set resolution to 1366×768 @ 60Hz.
- Restart normally and check if the monitor displays correctly.
Use Custom Resolution Utility (CRU)
- Download CRU (Custom Resolution Utility).
- Add a custom resolution: 1366×768 @ 60Hz, using DMT timing.
- Restart and apply the new resolution.
Try a Different Converter
- Some HDMI-to-VGA adapters don’t handle EDID properly or fail to scale correctly.
- Look for an active HDMI-to-VGA converter with external power (via USB) and EDID support.
Use the DVI Port Instead
- Get a DVI-D to VGA active converter (not passive).
- DVI-D carries digital signals, so you’ll need a powered converter that supports VGA output.
Check Monitor Specs
- The HP v185e supports:
- 1366×768 @ 60Hz (native)
- 1024×768 @ 60Hz
- 800×600 @ 60Hz
- Try these lower resolutions if 1366×768 fails.
Let me know how the monitor responds after trying these steps. If it lights up, you’ll have a reliable secondary screen. If not, I’ll help you explore deeper signal compatibility or alternative connection paths.
