HP 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-c0000 (2W0J6AV)

There are a few programs that have only recently begun crashing after running for a few minutes with no error message, after which the screen on my laptop will periodically jitter until I restart it. Opening certain programs after the initial crash will cause more frequent or pronounced graphical issues, that then go back to the "normal" amount of graphical issues that were present before opening this followup program.

I have kept up with all current Windows Updates. I have checked my Device Manager for updates to my display driver with no results. I don't see any backups that I can revert my system to. There is no reason to believe that my hardware was recently damaged.

It sounds like your laptop is experiencing some display issues related to graphical drivers or system stability. Here are a few steps to help diagnose and potentially fix the issue.

 

Check for Graphics Driver Updates:

  • Go to the HP Support website and download the latest graphics drivers for your specific laptop model.
  • Sometimes, drivers directly from the manufacturer’s website are more up-to-date than those available through Windows Update.

Reinstall Graphics Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, right-click on your graphics adapter and select "Uninstall device."
  • Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the graphics driver. If not, you can manually reinstall it using the driver you downloaded from HP Support.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic:

  • Type Windows Memory Diagnostic into the Start menu and run the tool to check for memory issues, which could sometimes cause system instability.

Check for System Corruption:

  • Run System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool (DISM) commands to check for system file corruption.
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
  • sfc /scannow
    • After that, run:
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

 

Update or Roll Back Windows Updates:

  • If you’ve recently installed Windows updates, they might be causing the issue. Check for any pending updates or consider rolling back recent updates from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Update history.

Check for Overheating:

  • Ensure that your laptop’s cooling system is working properly. Overheating can sometimes cause graphical issues. Make sure vents are not blocked and consider using a cooling pad.

Test in Safe Mode:

  • Boot into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, it could be a third-party software or driver issue.

Perform a Clean Boot:

  • Perform a clean boot to see if a background application might be causing the issue. This will help identify if a specific program is contributing to the crashes.
