HP Z27k G3 4K USB-C Display

Hi,

I recently bought a HP Z27k G3 4k and I noticed this annoying issue while on Linux. I have a dual boot desktop, with Windows 11 and Rocky Linux 9. On Windows, I can game for hours and watch movies without any issues, with the monitor connected by HDMI. However, with Linux, it is certain the monitor will freeze at least once per day, specially while watching youtube or any other video platform. It's not an issue with the OS, because I can still hear the video in the background.

I have to disconnect the cable from the graphics card and eventually power off the monitor on the power button, wait 30 seconds to 1 minute and then reconnect everything. I tried with Display Port cable and the result is the same.

Since there are no Linux drivers on the platform, any ideas on how to solve the mysterious problem?

Thanks

Despite my using Linux distros on my desktop for many years. I would advise AGAINST doing that on any HP PC -- for several reasons.

First, HP provides no support for Linux, so if you run into difficulties during the install, which you WILL, you will get no assistance in those from HP.  If you replace the Window OS with a Linux distro, or add a Linux distro, then you assume full responsibility for maintaining that PC -- including solving any problems with booting the other OS and/or installing the other OS.  Modern PCs with UEFI, instead of the older BIOS, are especially difficult to install because you have to go into the UEFI settings and make several changes before you can even boot from a USB stick -- and we are unable to assist in that work.

Second, PCs (especially laptops) use specialized drivers that only the OEM (in this case, HP) supplies.  Those drivers are usually not available in the Linux community, forcing you to use generic drivers which even if they do work, will often not provide the full functionality of the hardware.  You will then be coming back here asking for drivers, and we will then be telling you that HP does not have any Linux drivers.

I have a desktop that runs three versions of Windows and two Linux distros, and I regularly get display features on my monitors in Windows that the Linux distros can't match.  For example, until I updated the distros late last year, neither of them could handle three monitors -- where I have been using all three with Windows for YEARS.  And yeah, it's most likely a lack-of -drivers issue.

Thank you for commenting my issue. However, I believe your solution is off-topic. I never mentioned having an HP PC (desktop or laptop). The point I raised is with a monitor from HP (Z27k G3 4K), where sometimes freezes on Linux but never on Windows. Lately, I have the suspicion the issue might be with the graphic card not having the full drivers installed and therefore being the root cause.

OK, sorry, misunderstood your issue -- but still, HP PC or not, the lack-of-drivers issue is likely the same.
