HP M27f FHD Monitor
macOS 12.0 Monterey

When my Mac goes to sleep the monitor follows it to sleep. When I wake the computer up I have lost all the Word docs and excel sheets from the monitor. How do I get hem to stick in place on the monitor?

Anh just like that it has started playing up again.

Make sure you have autosave enabled by selecting "ON".

This url has more info about autosave

please read the section about using onedrive and also about autorecovery

I do not use onedrive so when I enable autosave I get a message that I have to start using onedrive.

IMHO< the autosave is a microsoft office problem.  They want you to use onedrive and hope that you will have to start paying them to get extra space.  Apple and Acronis do the same thing:  let you easily save to the "cloud" and then expect you to start paying when you need more space.

Possible work around can be read here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/word-documents-lost-after-computer-went-to-sl...

I would set the computer so it does not sleep automatically.  If a laptop do not close the lid.
