HP ENVY - 17t-ae000 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just purchased an AOC monitor to set up as an extended (secondary) monitor for my HP ENVY 23xt Beats All-in-One PC .  I am using an HDMI (secondary monitor) to USB (all-in-one PC) cable to connect them but my all in one will not detect it.  I have set the AOC monitor input to HDMI.  What am I doing wrong?

@ThelmaLouise, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Second Monitor Connection Issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To set up a secondary monitor for your HP ENVY 23xt Beats All-in-One PC using an HDMI connection, ensure you follow these steps:

Check Cable Compatibility: Ensure that the cable you are using is compatible with both devices. HDMI to USB cables usually do not work for video output. You need a proper HDMI output from your PC.

Use Proper Connections: Verify if your HP ENVY 23xt Beats All-in-One PC includes an HDMI output port. If it does, directly connect the HDMI cable to your PC's HDMI output port and to the AOC monitor’s HDMI input port.

Select Correct Input on Monitor: Make sure the AOC monitor input is set to HDMI.

Display Settings Configuration: After connecting, configure the display settings on your HP PC:

  • Right-click the desktop and select Display settings.
  • Scroll down to the Multiple displays section. If the second monitor is not detected, click on Detect.

Function Key for Display Switch: Use the function key combination (usually fn + f4 or similar) to switch between display modes. The options generally include:

  • PC screen only
  • Duplicate
  • Extend
  • Second screen only

Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your video drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from HP's support website for your specific model.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your response but I still need additional help.  First, there is no way to tell if the HDMI port on my HP PC is an input or an output port (it does not say on the port).  Since the HDMI to HDMI connection did not work, I assumed that it was the incorrect one.  That is why I tried the HDMI (monitor) to USB (HP PC) cable to give that a try.  That did not work either.  Then I purchased an HDMI to USB adapter designed for joining a second monitor and I connected the HDMI to HDMI cable to my HP PC using the HDMI to USB adapter.  That also did not work.  I then connected the monitor to my laptop to see if it was a faulty monitor and it worked perfectly (using HDMI to HDMI).  Where should I go from here?  Thanks!!!

Also, I wanted to add that I did have the secondary monitor set to HDMI input.  thanks!

@ThelmaLouise, welcome back—and thank you for the detailed follow-up!

I can imagine how frustrating this must feel, especially after trying so many combinations. Let’s walk through this together.

The HDMI port on your HP ENVY 23xt Beats All-in-One is actually an HDMI input—meaning it’s designed to receive video (like from a gaming console), not send it out to another display. So unfortunately, connecting a monitor via that HDMI port won’t work for extending your desktop.

Since the AIO lacks a native HDMI output, here’s your best option:

Use a USB-to-HDMI video adapter — but it must be a DisplayLink-certified adapter (not just a USB-to-HDMI cable). These adapters have a built-in chip that converts USB data into video output. Plug it into a USB 3.0 port on your PC, install the drivers (if not automatic), and connect the HDMI cable to your second monitor.

Once connected:

Right-click on your desktop → Display settings.

Scroll down to Multiple displays → click Detect if needed.

Choose Extend to use the second screen as an additional workspace.

You’ve already done the hard part—testing cables, checking the monitor. You’re so close to making this setup work.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
