Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to connect two monitors to my PC. My HP only has one HDMI output port. I am using that for my first monitor. I am trying to use the USB-C port to connect my second monitor with its HDMI port. When I first plugged in the USB-C to HDMI adapter, windows 11 said it didn't recognize the device, that it was malfunctioning. Before I take it back to the store, I wanted to make sure the problem wasn't on my end. I have checked that the display drivers are up to date. I have checked the cord connections and I have restarted my computer. Any suggestions?
