I've tried everything I can find on the forums, but nothing will make the brightness adjustments work - can anyone help?

The brightness slider does nothing - HP are rapidly driving me mad!

Hi there @Diarmuid21,

May the Forums be with you!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.  I understand that you are having trouble with the brightness control for your display. I am happy to help with this.

Please post the full product number for your computer. See the following, if you need help with that information. HP Desktop PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number?

What was your original operating system? Did the brightness control work properly with that OS?

Have you updated all the available drivers for your computer?  If not, try using the HP Support Assistant to get any available updates. HP PCs - Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8, 7)

If you have updated the drivers and there is no change with the brightness control, then it is likely the display driver is not totally compatible with Windows 10. In that case try the following:

1. Search for Device Manager, and launch it.

2. Navigate to the Display adapters section

3. Right-click on the installed display driver, and choose Update Driver Software

4. In the interface menu choose "Browse my computer for driver software".

5. Then choose the option "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer"

6. In the next screen, select "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" from the list under "Show compatible hardware" section.  then click "Next"

7. The driver should be installed, and test whether the brightness slider is working for you.

Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

You get my "godlike genius" award! Thank you so much - I hadn't seen your solution anywhere before and it has worked like a dream.

In case it helps future solutions the model of my PC is 520-1190ea and I think it orginally ran Windows 7.
