Blank screen black but computer still worked fine (recorded messages and I could access via network).
Opened and cleaned dust. Checked connections.
No fix, screen flashes the blue HP Screen for 0.5 second, then goes to black.
Replaced inverter. Screen and computer seem to be back to normal. I have visible display again.
Smelled melting plastic and upper left corner of display, black screen spreading from upper left corner of the touchscreen.
Power off.
Restart, screen OK but screen overheating again, with melting plastic smell and now smoke rising from back of display area.
Checked forums. Said maybe CPU and re-apply thermal paste.
I did. Same problem. Afraid to leave PC on as I had in the past.
What to do next ?

My Opinion:
Certainly do not switch on the power - "melting" and "smoke" are not compatible with operational hardware.
Because the situation has progressed to the "smoke" and "melt" stage, unless you are competent about your skill level to safely fix the computer, you might best take the unit to a qualified HP repair technician. The technician can check the level of damage and determine the best course of action to move forward.
The published "self-repair" document provides less "how to" detail than the Service guides found for notebooks or desktop units.
