May I ask what the BIOS update will do? I've had this same issue since purchasing my laptop and I had done all the fixes you recommended without any results.

I recall contacting HP support once and they did a BIOS fix. It seem to work, but then I had to reinstall Windows recently and do all the HP updates and I got the problem back.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand, you're having touchpad issue with your HP Notebook,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824

(Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

What is the operating system on PC?

Have you performed BIOS to default or BIOS Update?

How did you reinstall Windows on your PC?

Could you elaborate the issue?

Once I have the information, I'll help you with the troubleshooting steps,

Keep me posted,

Cheers 🙂

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

I have an HP Envy 17-ae-1xx

Windows 10

I contacted Microsoft to have them reinstall Windows 10

I did the BIOS reset

When I tap/click on the touchpad, the cursor jumps away. I've done all the adjustments necessary, but it continues to jump. I had contacted HP a long time ago and they did the BIOS reset, which worked. For some reason, it didn't work when I did it after the reinstall/updates.

Thanks for responding,

It's great to have you back,

Have you tried troubleshooting steps mentioned in my earlier post

If not, I suggest you try those steps,

Let's run the hardware test for touchpad:

Run HP PC UEFI Hardware Diagnostics Component test (F2) for Mouse

HP provides diagnostic software you can use to test hardware components on your computer and confirm hardware failures when you suspect something is wrong. Use HP PC Diagnostics UEFI as the preferred method for testing hardware.

NOTE: HP occasionally makes updates to its HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) environment. To download the latest version, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics (in English) website.

Run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to run tests on the computer's main components:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu displays.
  3. From the main menu, run hardware tests and view the test logs, change the language, access system information, check the UEFI version number, and find the address for the UEFI website.

Figure: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu

  4. Select Component Tests.
  5. Select Mouse. There are two mouse tests to determine if the mouse is functioning correctly, the Pointer Test and the Drag and Drop Test.

    Figure: Component Tests options

  6. Select the test you want to run and follow the instructions.

Bluetooth devices are not currently supported.

NOTE: If you need to end a test before it is complete, press the Escape key (esc).

  7. If the component fails a test, write down the information so you have it available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in the Test Logs on the main menu.

Adjust TouchPad or ClickPad sensitivity settings

  1. Search Windows for 'mouse button', then click the Mouse or Change mouse settings Control Panel setting in the results.
  2. On the Device SettingsClickPad Settings, or TouchPad Settings tab, select your device from the Devices list, if present, then click SettingsClickPad Settings, or TouchPad Settings.

Figure: TouchPad or ClickPad device settings in Mouse Properties

  3. In the Properties window, click the arrow next to Pointing, click Sensitivity, then click the settings  icon.

Figure: Sensitivity setting in the ClickPad Properties window

  4. In the Sensitivity window, use the slider bar to change the touch pressure required to move the pointer, then click Close.
  5. Enable the optional Momentum pointing option for trackball-like responsiveness from the TouchPad or ClickPad. Select the checkbox next to Momentum to enable the momentum options, then click the settings icon to adjust the glide distance.
  6. Enable the optional EdgeMotion pointing option to simplify long-distance pointer motions. When enabled, when you reach the edge of the TouchPad, the pointer continues to move until you lift your fingers off the TouchPad or ClickPad. Click the settings icon to enable and adjust EdgeMotion regions and speed.
  7. Enable the optional Accessibility pointing options to specify and limit how the pointer responds. Click the settings icon to enable and adjust sticky borders, slow motion, and constrained motion.

Let me know how that pans out

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask any other queries as well,

Considering, this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

What was the Touchpad Test result?

Have you tried using an external mouse?

Does the same happen while using an external mouse?

You could try creating a new user account and check the functionality of Touchpad. Follow steps from the link: Click here

If the issue still persists, I would suggest you perform a Resethttps://support.hp.com/my-en/document/c04742289

Note: Back up your personal data before performing Reset.

Keep me posted,

Cheers 🙂

The test showed no issues, I have used an external mouse and didn't have that issue. I did a reset earlier this week when my system crashed. I attempted a restore, but it wouldn't work, that's why I did a reset. May I ask what the BIOS option does? A technician a few months ago did something w/the BIOS and that fixed the problem. When I did a BIOS reset, all it did was put my desktop picture back to the default.

Thanks for responding,

Updating the BIOS, also known as "flashing the BIOS," replaces the BIOS firmware. When completed successfully, a BIOS update can fix or enhance aspects of a computer's performance, or provide support for newly installed hardware.

For more information: Click here

I suggest you try updating Chipset driver from HP Driver page: www.hp.com/drivers

Restart the computer and check the functionality. If the issue persists, contact phone support.

I'm sending out a Private message with the information to contact phone support, please check your inbox.

I have the same problem with an HP 15-au123cl notebook. When first purchased, it worked fine, but after the original Windows 10 Creators Update, the cursor started jumping. As far as I can tell, Synaptics and HP have totally ignored this problem. I will be replacing this notebook soon, but definitely not with an HP because they seem to put no priority on maintaining or improving existing products. If anyone has a solution, I would be happy to hear it.
