HP Pavilion 24-b012la
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had this problem for a while now, and think it arose when I installed a new Windows 10 Update. About 2-3 Months ago my desktop (HP Pavilion 24-b012la) touchscreen stopped working and I have been unable to restore it. I have searched online and attempted many fixes without success.

Two things stand out in Device Manager:

1) Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers the following appears:

“Unknown USD Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) and when I open this, the following message appears in Device Status:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed.

2) In addition, under the Human Interface Devices, where the touchscreen should appear, the “HID-compliant touchscreen” is nowhere to be found.

After so many internet searches and reading many articles I have the strong suspicion that these two events are related. In other words that the unknown USB device is actually the HID compliant touchscreen but somehow Windows fails to detect it.

I have disabled and uninstalled the devices; I have run all matter of HP and third party hardware wizards and fixes, and nothing has worked.  I am now out of options, and if anyone can assist with this it would be greatly appreciated.

@AlFields Welcome to HP Forums Community!

The best way to confirm if this is either a hardware or a software related issue is to check if the touchscreen works in the BIOS, use the below steps for details:

(Accessed by tapping on F10 while restarting the computer).

If it works on bios, it's a software issue: please reinstall the display drivers, install the latest updates for the display adapters and BIOS, if the issue persists,

You could reinstall the windows using the recovery partition or the recovery media to fix the issue.

If it doesn't work on BIOS either, I recommend running a hardware test on the touchscreen to be sure since it isn't working in the BIOS, please use the below steps to perform the test:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.

  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.

  4. The Component Tests menu displays.

  5. Touch Screen Test - Quick interactive test to determine if the touch screen is functioning correctly. (This test is currently not available in the Windows version of the hardware diagnostics.)

To run the test, click Touch Screen, and then click Run once.

  6. If the test fails, please capture the 24 character failure ID and revert with the details. and if it passes, we may need to check if a windows program is conflicting with the touchscreen, try checking if it works in safe mode.

Let me know how that pans out,
