One more question. First a reiteration. I tried the HD 5450 card again because I thought I might be going nuts but it does in fact have no video (No BIOS screen either and no beeps) when installed in this machine. Why it works in another PC is a mystery to me. I even removed a screw holding the MB down near the back of the PCIeX16 slot in case it was stopping the new card from seating properly with no change.
It gets a bit uglier. My neighbor took his video card out of his machine and I installed it in mine. I also tried several other cards, some old, some not so old. His HP (all it says is V292 with an HP part number 758181-001) card shows BIOS but sits there and offers an occasional single beep. I installed a PNY GeForce GT 740 next, it came to the BIOS screen and just sits there with an occasional single beep too. The only cards that come up and load Windows 7 and their driver is the original Nvidia GeForce 7500 LE and a VT (VisionTech) Radeon HD 3450 that I've tried.
I've been looking around and I believe the HP site says the Nvidia GeForce 700 series should work.
I found the ZOTAC version of this card. Does anyone know if it will work in the HP M3970AM Angelica 1.2 MB?
Description:
ZOTAC GeForce GT 730 DirectX 12 (feature level 11_0) ZT-71113-20L 2GB 64-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 (x8 lanes) HDCP Ready Zone Edition Video Card
HELP, stuck at Win7...

From previous discussions on this subject with different users - if the GT 740 will not post beyond the HP splash screen, then the GT 730 is not likely to do any better. There is a model made by Saphire that has a compatiblity switch for various BIOS types that may work.

Thanks. What is the model of the Sapphire card that you referenced that you think would have the best chance of working?
FWIW, I looked at the GT660 (mentioned in a previous post) and they are a bit pricey for me. I see the GeForce 610 has a Win10 driver.
To summarize my situation, I need:
- A Video card that works in my machine and has a Win10 supported driver
- I am not a gamer so I just want the least expensive solution
I don't want a guarantee but I would like to get a recommendation for a card that will give me the best chance of success at the lowest cost.
I see there is a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6450 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card ( 100322L) – on sale for $33.00.
I will buy another card but this is the end of my trial and error method of upgrade for this video card. They are not returnable and they are not guaranteed to work… I understand why but it shouldn't be this hard. Geesh.
So, Sapphire HD 6450, GeForce 610, or ????
It wasn't me, Microsoft started this! 😞

Actually cannot find the reference to the Sapphire card. One of the other regular posters on this forum had made that suggestion. I notice that picture you posted awhile back is now showing. That is the site where I saw the "compatible cards" Only thing I can say is try another one listed on there.

Although I thank you for your support and recommendations, I gave the whole thing a little more thought and researched upgrading to Win 10 using the legacy driver for my NVIDIA GeForce 7500 LE.
After installing Win 10, activating it, and loading the legacy video drivers I had a terrible experience where no Office 2013 programs would open. They crashed immediately. Of course I thought the issue was the legacy driver but it turned out to be that the Office suite got corrupted or just didn't transition for some reason.
I could not remove certain "add ins" as some sites suggested since the programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) would not stay open.
I performed a "repair" from "Programs and Features" and so far, knock on wood, everything seems to be working fine.

Yes, knock wood. I do know that Office 2013 will work OK in Windows 10, as I have it installed on a PC.

You are correct.
I upgraded my wife's machine to Win 10 yesterday and the first time I brought up an Office 2013 product it automatically ran "configuration" and worked after that with no problems.
Her machine is newer (HP Envy 715-215xt - i7) and there were no compatibility issues.
