I tried a video display cable to connect into an adapter on the Mac for HDMI, but it doesn’t recognize it

The monitor is a bit old. Its specs

Looks like you use VGA port on the monitor which requires conversion from digital (HDMI on your computer) to analog (on your monitor) , The best option is to use DVI-D to HDMI cable (both give digital signals) and you don't need adapter/converter.
