Shuts down automatically and restarts

Hi @Srden,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that your HP ProOne 440 23.8-inch G9 All-in-One Desktop PC shuts down and restarts unexpectedly while you are working, causing unsaved work to be lost.

Before proceeding, please confirm:

  • Which operating system is installed?
  • Does the computer display a blue screen, error message, or warning before restarting?
  • Does this happen while using a particular application or during general use?
  • Does the computer feel unusually hot, or does the fan become loud before it restarts?
  • Is the PC connected directly to a wall outlet or through a surge protector/extension?

Please back up your important files and temporarily use applications with automatic saving enabled.

Disable automatic restart to capture an error

  1. In Windows, search for and open View advanced system settings.
  2. Under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
  3. Clear Automatically restart, and then select OK.
  4. Continue using the PC and note any blue-screen error or stop code that appears.

Turning this option off allows Windows to display the error instead of restarting immediately.

Run the HP hardware diagnostics

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Select System Tests, and then run the Fast Test.
  5. If the Fast Test passes but the restarting continues, run the Extensive Test.
  6. If a component fails, note the failed component and the 24-digit Failure ID.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI runs outside Windows and can help identify hardware failures.

Please also ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked and that there is adequate space around the PC. Dust buildup or restricted airflow can increase internal heat, and overheating can cause Windows to stop responding or restart unexpectedly.

Reply with the operating system, any blue-screen stop code, and the diagnostic results. Please do not post the PC’s serial number publicly.

Take care and have a good day!

I'm an HP Employee.
