Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

i have a Samsung 3840x2160 monitor which used to work on Windows 10, but due to disk corruption, i reinstalled windows 10 and now the monitor only goes to 1920x1080.  Additionally the placement on the screen is imperfect- the taskbar is truncated so that i can only see the top the rest is "off-screen"  Same for left and right- they are off screen by a quarter or half inch so i cannot click on the START button and i cant view the system tray icons.

This is a second monitor so i can get to those on my 1st monitor but it shows there is something faulty in the graphics system-  it used to work perfectly before the reinstall and the monitor works fine when i connect to my laptop.

I have installed the latest graphics driver from Intel (20.19.15.5171) , but no change.  I checked Samsung support and their advice was to check with HP.

I realize this is an older system out of support but it still works great and i want to hang onto it as long as i can.

Hi @j20241

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with your monitor's resolution and screen placement after reinstalling Windows 10. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this:

1. Verify Display Settings

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Display Settings.
  • Under Resolution, ensure that the monitor is set to 3840x2160. If this option isn't available, it might indicate a driver or compatibility issue.

2. Check Graphics Driver Compatibility

  • Although you've installed the latest Intel graphics driver (20.19.15.5171), it might not fully support 4K resolution for your monitor. Try downloading an older version of the driver from Intel's website or HP's support page for your desktop model.
  • Alternatively, use Intel's Driver & Support Assistant to check for compatible drivers.

3. Adjust Monitor Settings

  • Access the monitor's on-screen display (OSD) menu using its physical buttons.
  • Look for options like Aspect Ratio, Position, or Scaling and adjust them to fit the screen properly.

4. Update Windows

  • Ensure that Windows 10 is fully updated. Sometimes, updates include fixes for display and driver issues.
  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates.

5. Test with a Different Cable

  • If you're using an HDMI cable, try switching to a DisplayPort cable (if supported by your monitor and graphics card). Some cables may not support 4K resolution properly.

6. Check GPU Settings

  • Open the Intel Graphics Control Panel or Intel Command Center.
  • Under Display Settings, ensure that the resolution is set to 3840x2160 and scaling is set to Maintain Aspect Ratio.

7. Perform a Clean Installation of the Graphics Driver

  • Uninstall the current graphics driver via Device Manager.
  • Restart your computer and install the driver again, ensuring it's compatible with your monitor.

8. Consider a Dedicated GPU

  • If your desktop has a PCIe slot, consider installing a dedicated graphics card that supports 4K resolution. This could provide better performance and compatibility for your monitor.
