The video chipset in my daughter's HP M01-F1114 stopped working. I want to install a PCI graphics card, as I assume this will override the installed card? But I have questions..
What one do I get? The unit isn't used for heavy gaming (save for Minecraft and the like), mainly just regular video viewing and internet browsing.
Will I need to upgrade the power source (this unit is 180W from the factory)? Will I need to upgrade the RAM (it currently has 12GB RAM, and the installed graphics card is 496MB).

@navvet93, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You're on the right track, installing a PCIe graphics card will indeed override the integrated video chipset, which sounds like it's no longer functioning. Let’s go through your questions step-by-step:
What graphics card should you get?
Since your daughter uses the PC mainly for:
- Minecraft (light gaming)
- Video playback
- Browsing
You don't need a high-end GPU. But the key constraint is your power supply: 180W is quite limited.
Recommendation: Go with the NVIDIA GT 1030 (GDDR5 version). It fits your use case, sips power, and fits most HP mini/mid towers.
Do you need to upgrade the power supply?
No, not necessarily.
As long as you choose a low-profile, low-power card like the GT 1030 or Quadro P400, your 180W PSU should be sufficient.
Important: Avoid cards that require a 6-pin PCIe power connector — your PSU likely doesn’t have one.
Do you need to upgrade the RAM?
No.
Your daughter’s HP M01-F1114 already has 12GB RAM, which is more than enough for Minecraft, video playback, and general use. Also, a dedicated GPU has its own VRAM, so the 496MB previously shared from system RAM won’t matter anymore.
Please Note:
- After installing the GPU, go into the BIOS (if needed) and set the primary display to PCIe or disable integrated graphics if it doesn't switch automatically.
- Be sure the card physically fits the M01-F1114 is a microATX mini-tower, so low-profile cards are recommended.
- Minecraft benefits from OpenGL and decent driver support — NVIDIA cards typically handle this better on lower-end hardware.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
