When Microsoft update replaced the display driver after feature update to windows 10 home version 1709, I got permanent black screen that I cant get rid of. The HP drivers site doesn't list a valid driver for this win 10 release.
If I force the device to use the basic Microsoft display driver, it works fine, but Microsoft update then immediately kicks in and I am back to black screen within a few minutes.
How can I get the working driver for release 1709, or force my machine to use the basic MS driver permanently so update doesn't splat it?
I can use the machine in safe mode, but can't do anything useful, or I can access it remotely via realVNC. I just can't see anything on the actual display.
Help!?

Welcome to HP Support Community
I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest compatible drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
-
Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

1) I mis-typed, it is Windows 10 ver 1809 feature update applied 11/2/19, not ver 1709.
2) It is a desktop with an external display not a Notebook.
3) Support assistant is already installed, and doesn't offer me any new drivers.
4) I have fixed the problem with a temporary work-around by forcing the machine to use the default Microsoft VGA driver which is adequate for my needs.
5) I will wait a few months then try the HP supplied Intel graphics driver again. Maybe there will be a new version by then.
Thanks.

Unfortunately I spoke too soon.
Last night, after two whole days of being able to use my PC normally, Windows update kicked in and reinstalled the bad driver Intel Corp Display 11/19/2018 12.00.00 AM 25.20.100.6446 and I'm back to black screen again.
Please can someone help sort this out?

Welcome to HP Support Community
I suggest you uninstall the problematic update driver first
- Start
–> Settings –> Update and security –> Advanced options –> View your update history –> Uninstall Updates.
- Select the unwanted Update from the list and click Uninstall
To prevent the automatic installation of a specific Windows Update or an updated driver on Windows 10 try these steps
Download this Troubleshooter: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab to temporarily prevent the driver from being reinstalled

I have already tried uninstalling the driver update(s) everytime Windows 10 reinstalls them. It makes no difference.
As soon as the display driver is updated by Microsoft Update, I get black screen and can't use the machine.
This last week, I have prevented the updates by setting "active hours" between 07.00 and modnight, and making sure the machine is off overnight. There are two updates waiting to install,
Intel Corporation - Display - 11/19/2018 12:00:00 AM - 25.20.100.6446
and
Intel(R) Corporation - MEDIA - 4/16/2016 12:00:00 AM - 8.20.0.922
From my experience so far, it is the display one that causes the black screen, but it may not be the underlying cause.
There is no link for the troubleshooter you refer to in your post, and it says "You can refer to this" and then nothing?
Thanks.

I have now succesfully used the troubleshooter to hide the display driver update and it no longer gets re-installed.
However, my original problem still exists, which is that whatever driver I try to install now, from HP or Intel or Microsoft, always gives me a black screen, whoich I can't get rid of until I uninstall the driver and revert to the default Microsoft display driver,.
Part way through the driver installation, the screen goes black, I get a sound like it makes when a device is unplugged, and I never get the display back until I remove the driver.
Is there a log file that might show what the installer did, and what went wrong?

If the computer is working fine without the latest driver, then I suggest you wait till Microsoft release an updated driver then you can try downloading it. As of now you can just block the update that was causing the problem and ignore the latest driver if your computer is working fine without it
