Ok I have set the addresses to the google server settings and run diagnostics and now I have the message "The default gateway is not available". Anything else I can do here?

HP Recommended

IPv4 Address = 192.168.2.155 (Preferred)

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway = fe80::1%7

DNS Servers =  fe80::1%7 ()same as default gateway)

Hello @BlondeBeast

Change IPv4 LAN settings on HP Elite Desktop to manual/static assignment:

IPv4 Address = 192.168.2.160

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway =192.168.2.1

DNS Servers = 192.168.2.1

Ok. Should I leave the Alternative DNS servers as 8.8..4.4 or duplicate the DNS server numbers (which seems pointless)? And do I reboot or something?

(1) Please set the settings as suggested.

No alternate DNS.

(2) Then Reboot Windows and let network cable connected.

Comes back with "Default Gateway is not available". I have rebooted and the problem is still there. Can you see any other cause? I have a network card that I can try plugging in although it is a high profile one and will have to be used with the lid off (I will be careful of course) - to see if that solves the problem. Unless you can see anything glaring or obvious to do now?

HP Recommended

Ah! Ok. I will change that and do so now.

Done that, still no internet access. I am signing off for today as it is very late for me now. Thanks for all your help and I will see tomorrow if there is anything else that can be done. I may try  plugging in another network card as I mentioned above. The PC is blitz fast so I would like to be able to use it.

Hi again - I'm back! What if I were to buy an USB-Ethernet adapter and simply plug it into a USB port (and probably disable the Intel onboard NIC)? Would Windows 10 install that straight away as a network card and thus I would be able to get onto the net? Do you have any knowledge or experience of using these things (before I buy the admittedly very cheap devices)?

Hello @BlondeBeast

Yes you can use USB-to-Ethernet adapter. It should be plug&play or provide all required drivers for Windows operating system.

Give it a try and keep me updated.

Good luck
