The connection to the printer is (most usually) accomplished by installing the printer's software (Full Feature Software) for the particular printer onto your computer.
During the installation procedure, the printer is contacted (by the installation program) and connected to the home network. Assuming your computer is connected to that same network, you can then use the printer software and various other programs to send jobs to the printer.
If the printer is an HP Printer, look for the software for it:
HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads
Assuming you find the printer and the necessary software for your computer's Operating System, download the printer software, save it, and then install the software. After the software is installed on your computer, Restart the computer and log in.

- Scroll down on the printer's Software and Driver webpage to find Video help to install the software.
- Click the "Homepage" button > Select Manuals > download the User Guide for your printer
If the printer is another brand, use your favorite search engine and search for the printer model drivers. The procedure is likely similar: Download, save, and install the printer software > Restart the computer and log in.
