Networking won’t work on computer with newly restored WinXPPro

My Compaq Presario SR2000 Windows XP Pro crashed on my old HDD. So I installed a new HDD; loaded WXPPro on it. But I can’t get the networking to work. The 1394 Net Adapter says it is working properly, but it won’t connect to the Internet or to my home network. However, I notice in the Device Manager that following “Other Devices” are missing drivers:

Ethernet Controller

SM Bus Controller

Video Controller (VGA compatible)

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

I’m assuming the Ethernet Controller and possibly the SM Bus Controller might have something to do with that. If so, where would I obtain drivers for them?

Other things to try to restore network connectivity?

Hi:

HP has retired support for that model series, but I should be able to find the drivers you need from the individual hardware component manufacturer's websites.

Please post the hardware ID's for each of the devices that need drivers.

To find the hardware ID, go to the device manager and click on the device needing the driver.

Then click on the Details tab at the top of the device.

Post the string of characters that begin with PCI/VEN.

Here are the links to the drivers you need...Download them from another PC, copy them to a USB flash drive and install them from that--at least until you get the ethernet driver installed.

Note: Windows XP doesn't have a built in file unzipping program, so use the free 7-Zip utility.  The first file listed at the top of the link below is the 32 bit program.

Install the smbus controller driver first and restart the PC.  Download, unzip and run the setup application.

The audio is a little tricky.   It is usally a two step process for High Definition Audio devices and XP SP2. 

If you have XP SP3, you should be able to skip the first driver link, and go right to the Realtek audio driver.

The reason I had you install the chipset driver first (smbus controller), is because it may get another HD audio device to show up, and you need a different driver for that.  If it does, then you will need to install this driver first, restart the PC, and then install the Realtek audio driver.

I don't think the internet works well with XP if you don't use a 3rd party internet browser like Firefox.

Even Google Chrome quit support for XP.

Did you do the updates to XP and at least get SP 3 installed?  That might help.

You may also want to update to IE8 using the standalone installer if you have not done so already.

I think that will allow you to do windows updates through the web where it provides the optional updates.
