Hi,
Please share the exact HP model/product number and Windows version so we can give more specific guidance.
For a system that is hanging or working very slowly, I would first separate software issues from possible hardware issues.
Please try the following steps:
- Restart the computer fully.
Do not use Sleep or Hibernate for this test. Shut it down completely, wait a few seconds, then power it on again.
- Check Task Manager:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
- Check CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU usage
- If Disk, CPU, or Memory is stuck near 100%, note which process is causing it
- Disable unnecessary startup apps:
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Disable apps you do not need at startup
- Restart the computer
- Make sure the SSD or hard drive has free space.
Try to keep at least 15–20% free space available on the system drive.
- Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Turn off the computer
- Power it on and press Esc repeatedly
- Press F2
- Run the System Test
- Also run the Memory Test and Storage/SSD Test
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/help/hp-pc-hardware-diagnostics
- Update drivers from HP Support for your exact model:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers
Install the latest available:
- BIOS/firmware
- Chipset driver
- Graphics driver
- Storage driver
- Network driver
- Run Windows repair commands.
Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart the computer after the commands finish.
- Check Windows Reliability Monitor:
- Search for Reliability Monitor
- Open View reliability history
- Look for repeated critical errors or app crashes
- Scan for malware using Windows Security or your trusted antivirus.
- If the computer is overheating, clean the air vents and use it on a hard flat surface. Avoid using it on a bed, blanket, or soft surface.
If HP Diagnostics reports a Failure ID, please post the Failure ID here and contact HP Support. If all hardware tests pass, then the issue is more likely related to Windows, drivers, startup apps, malware, or a corrupted system installation.
Regards,
Haytham
