Broadcom BCM43142 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter not connected. Can't get on wifi with my desktop pc. How do I know if the wifi card is bad? Is there an update or a driver? should I buy an external wifi dongle?

Hi:
This is the latest W8.1 wifi driver for that model card.
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72501-73000/sp72927.exe
If that doesn't get the wifi card to work, I recommend that you purchase an external USB wifi adapter.
There is no easy way to tell if the wifi card is bad or not.
You would have to first do a factory reset of the PC to see if it was an operating system issue, and if the wifi still didn't work, then you can assume the wifi adapter is bad.
