Hi @Mark-74

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when your wireless keyboard doesn’t respond during the first startup but works fine after a restart. You’ve already observed the pattern carefully, which is very helpful.

Let’s go through a set of steps to stabilize the keyboard connection on your HP Pavilion All‑in‑One 24‑k0xxx.

Check the wireless receiver

  • Ensure the USB wireless receiver (dongle) is firmly connected to a rear USB port on the PC.
  • Avoid using front or hub connections during startup, as rear ports are initialized earlier.

Power reset for the keyboard

  • Turn off the PC.
  • Remove the wireless receiver.
  • Switch off the keyboard (if it has a power switch) or remove/reinsert the batteries.
  • Reconnect the receiver and power on the PC.

Update drivers and BIOS

  • Go to the HP support page for your Pavilion All‑in‑One model and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers:
HP Pavilion All-in-One PCs - Drivers and Downloads
  • Updated firmware ensures USB initialization and wireless devices are recognized correctly at startup.

Check Windows power settings

  • Open Device Manager (press Windows + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Right‑click each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
  • This prevents the receiver from being disabled during boot.

Test different USB ports

  • Try connecting the wireless receiver to another rear USB port.
  • Some ports initialize faster and can help the keyboard respond immediately at startup.

Confirm keyboard batteries

  • Ensure fresh batteries are installed. Weak batteries can delay the signal handshake during boot.

By reseating the receiver, refreshing the keyboard power, updating BIOS and drivers, and adjusting USB power settings, the keyboard should respond right from the initial startup instead of only after a restart.
