printer will not print from laptop as it has somehow gone into fax mode, even though fax has not been set up.

The default printer device may need to be set to your printer as opposed to the printer-fax.

 

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click on your printer > Select Set as default printer
