I am trying to share the QuickBooks software on my desktop with my laptop

And what is happening when you do? Likely the Quickbooks is licensed for a single installation so this is really a problem with Intuit not HP.

I purchased a second license for the laptop, I just cant get the QB on the desktop to share to my laptop

You mean you are using file sharing between the two computers and trying to get the QB data file on the desktop to open remotely using the QB  software install on the laptop? If so the security features of the software are going to prevent that.

I guess I am gullible, they told me when I bought the extra license that I just needed to network the two computers

It is doable just not in the simple way you are trying to do it.
