my modem blew in a lightning strike, comcast (network provider) replaced modem. Now my desktop says "Windows did not detect any networking hardware. When I try to check my adapter settings it gives me an empty window. It keeps asking me for the network adapter.

Hi:
If your PC was connected via an ethernet cable, most likely the ethernet chip on the motherboard also was damaged by the lightning strike.
Unfortunately, in order to fix the ethernet chip, since it is an integral part of the motherboard, the entire motherboard would need to be replaced.
So...the easiest thing to do to restore the ethernet adapter would be to purchase an external USB to RJ-45 ethernet adapter.
Something like this...
Your PC only has USB 2 ports, so you will not get the full gigabit ethernet connection speed, however.
