I bought an Acer computer and a junk LCD monitor that died on me in less than a week and I had to return.  I went with the HP 2310m instead.  Got it hooked up and the desktop is about a half an inch too big all around when HDMI output is set to 1920 x 1080.  If I lower resolution to 1776 x 1000 it all fits with some extra black around edges.

The VGA connection works fine on 1920 x 1080.  The HDMI worked fine on the junk monitor I returned.  I called Acer and they ran me through a couple of tests and said it must be the monitor, called HP and they ran me through a couple of tests and said it must be the computer.

It's an intel integrated G45/G43 Express chipset.  I've tried downloading most recent intel driver and no luck.  I don't have a DVI device to try.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Be sure that you have the monitor driver installed.

This Intel update utility might find a later video driver.  Intel Driver Update Utility

Are you using a HDMI cable without adapters?  Only connect one input source cable.

You can try a monitor reset. Power off the monitor and unplug it.  Then hold down the monitor's power button for 30-60 seconds.  Now plug the monitor back in a give it a go. Look in the monitor's menu and be sure that the source input is set to HDMI.

Still doing it.  I had downloaded all the recent drivers, but tired again in case I missed something.  I tried the monitor reset tonight.

I went back to Office Max and we tried their display HP with a couple of computers and they did the same thing in the store.

I went HDMI into a 1080p projector I borrowed and everything showed fine.

I did notice that in the intel graphics utility it lists this as a2310  television instead of a monitor.  It could be possible that they aren't communicating properly and since it thinks it's a television it is overscanning the edges like TVs do.

I hesitate to buy a HDMI to DVI cable and try the DVI because I'd be stuck with it if it didn't work.

The digital signals between the HDMI and DVI are the same so I wouldn't go down that path right now.  www.pccables.com has lots of reasonably priced cables.

If the same monitor is behaving the same way in the store then it might be a monitor problem.

If your monitor is still under warranty then contact HP support. If it's within 21 days of purchase then return the monitor otherwise it's a warranty issue.

The issue is that the Intel graphics thinks the monitor is a TV. So following CE specifications it places an approximate 8% border around the picture as this is the amount a TV, or CE device, will overscan.

I have not looked into the Intel control panel, but with the ATI and nVidia control panesl, there are options for TV's and adjusting this overscan.

I thought it was the TV thing too, but I hooked a blu ray player into the HDMI and watched it through the computer running VGA into the monitor as normal and it was pretty much the same.  It cut off 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of the edges when viewed with the blu ray through HDMI while showing a full-edge to-edge picture with playing into VGA input from computer.

I've played the computer through a 1080 projector and two other 1080 monitors via the HDMI cable and they all showed full picture edge to edge without scaling down or lowering the resolution.

At Office Max, we hooked a computer to several dispaly monitors - an HP 2310 like mine, an AOC, and an Acer - the HP cut off the edges while the other two didn't.  Even the guy in the store was surprised and said he would warn people before they bought the HP monitor that it might happen.

Unfortunately, I can only conclued it's the HP monitor or software.  It's disappointing because the picture is very nice.  I'm probably going to return it.  Why pay the money for an HD device if the HD cuts off the edges?  I know this makes me sound dumb, but I don't want the scores along the top or the stat crawls on the bottom to be cut off when I watch sports (when I get an HD ;cable box).

Thanks to all who responded.

I decided to give tech support one more try tonight since I really like the look of this monitor (except when I can't see 3/4 inches of the edges in HDMI mode).

Of the three calls, they all told me it was my graphics card, but couldn't explain why the signal from the DVD player hooked directly into the HDMI input also had the edges cut off since it did not invovle the computer at all.  (It's not the cable, I've tried two.)

The tech on the first call was useless.  On the second call I told the tech that I couldn't access the "CUSTOM SCALING" adjustment in the "IMAGE CONTROL" section of the menu which, according to the manual, should fix this sort of thing.  It's greyed out and I can't get to it.  He said that didn't sound right and asked me to hold.  After 10 minutes he came back and said they were having the same problem on a monitor in their office and they were trying to solve the problem.  Another 10 minutes went by and he said they couldn't figure it out and I should call back in two hours.

I called back, got a different guy who told me there was no way to hook me back up with the second guy.  He did end up offering to have me sind it in for repair.  I told him I think it's more than a problem with just this monitor because the one in the second guy's office was doing it, and the one on display at Office Max did it when I went back to test it a few days ago.

I guess I'll exchange it and see if the new one does it, too.  The picture is so good that I don't want to give up if it's a tech problem that can be solved.

Exchanging the monitor did no good.  The one I brought home also cuts off the edges with ANYTHING plugged into the HDMI.  I'm starting to think this is a problem with all HP 2310s, not just the ones I've had.

What model PC are you using?

I have a 2210 that behaves exactly the same way.
