If the HDD has failed, this is why it won't go to your login screen. It sounds to me like you are very uncomfortable with repairing a computer, I advise you to take it to a local computer shop. They will diagnose the problem and fix whatever has failed. I simply don't want to cause you any further problems.

Here are the specs of the current HDD:
1.5 TB SATA 3G (3.0 Gb/sec)
- 5400 rpm
You should buy a HDD the same size or larger to assure that the HP Recovery media will work to recover the system. I like Western Digital products. They seem to have less problems. If you have further questions about the best HDD for your system, I suggest contacting Western Digital's Tech Support for help. They are the experts on their products.
