To first answer the questions about whether updates:
Windows 7 is running Service Pack 1 and has the latest updates.
The firewire card is running the latest driver version.
So, I installed the USB card in the only open slot (without removing the firewire card) which is Slot 2, and waited.
The Driver Installation bubble began, and reports "Device driver software not successfully installed", then lists the following
Base System Device X NO DRIVER FOUND
ASMedia XHCI Controller Ready to Use
PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge Ready to Use
ASMedia XHCI Controller Ready to Use
ASMedia XHCI Controller Ready to Use
ASMedia XHCI Controller Ready to Use
USB Root Hub Ready to Use
USB Root Hub Ready to Use
USB Root Hub Ready to Use
USB Root Hub Ready to Use
I went to the High Point Tech website and downloaded the latest driver and installed it. It still gives the error message.
The Hardware ID is what I listed in my first post.
What next?

Hi,
I am not sure how much pain your want to go thru for this issue.
Install the USB card as in the past and check to see if you are still having the same issue. If yes, then open up the RUN windows and enter: msinfor32
Look for IRQ conflicts and what IRQs are being shared.
If had this issue with my PC I would remove all of the PCI cards except one video card and then try the USB card in each slot and see it the same issue occurs. Be sure that the dirver installs correctly.
I know with my custom PC that when I install a second video card, some PCI slots are disabled in the bios and the speed is lowered for the second PCI slot with the video card. I don't believe that it's totally about bandwidth but more so with IRQ assignments.
You might even try disabling all unused ports in the bios and see if that helps after you try the above suggestions.

Thank you for hanging in with me on this problem.
First to the Bios issue: I'm not sure how to disable unused ports in the bios. I just went into the Bios set up and looked in the Advanced tab at all of the PCI slots. Each is set to "disable" on the "Compute" So if I make changes there I would need very detailed guidance.
As to the IRQ conflicts (and I think you meant to type "msinfo32", which I figured out.:)
When I click "Conflicts/Sharing", there's a long list of resources; presumably they are shared and not all conflicts. There are lots of Memory Addresses and I/O Ports, and then the following IRQs:
IRQ 20 (6 mentions) Intel ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3A37
Intel ICH10 Family US Enhanced Host Controller - 3A3A
PCI standard PCI to PCI bridge
Intel ICH10 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 3A40
Intel ICH10 Family PCI Express Root Port 5 - 3A48
IRQ 21 (4 mentions) Intel ICH10 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 3A4A
Intel ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3A38
High Definition Audio Controller
Intel ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 3A35
IRQ 22 (3 mentions) Intel ICH10 Family USB Universal Host Controller 3A39
Intel ICH10 Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 3A3C
Intel ICH10 Family USB Universal host Controller -3A36
IRQ 40 (3 mentions) - PCI standard PCI-t0-PCI bridge (all 3)
Does that tell you anything? I have no idea what these things mean, which is why I'm seeking assistance!
If you can suggest anything based on this information it would be much appreciated!
Also, please tell me what I should be looking for in the BIOS settings to find out if any of the PCI slots have been disabled because of the dual video cards.
Thank you!!!!

Hi,
What you have posted looks good. I am fairly certain that the issue is now a driver issue and you need the vendor to supply you with an updated driver that will correctly install.
You might try my other suggestions and see if any makes a difference. It's not uncommon for vendors to have drivers that don't install correctly in every motherboard configuration.
Sorry about the typo on "msinfo"

I have contacted the vendor, High Point Technologies (which do their darndest to make themselves as difficult to access as possible!) so it may be a while before I even have an answer.
I did download the latest firmware from their site as well, but I really am afraid to start "flashing BIOS" or whatever that is, as I know that if you do it wrong you destroy your computer.
Short of that, is there anything else you can think of to try while I wait?

Hi,
Flashing the bios on the USB card is not going to destroy your computer. However, unless you can get the manufacturer to say that you should flash this bios on the card, you might run the risk of destroying the card and voiding the warranty.

Hi, just thought you'd like to hear what the Support people at High Point said about the error message: basically, they said to ignore it, as long as the USB card worked! I replied that if this error message (which many people take seriously) is a known issue, perhaps it should be noted as such in the ReadMe, or perhaps they could just make their installer work so that you did not receive a "your new hardware did not install properly" message!
Anyway, thanks for all the time you put in chasing this wild goose!

Hi,
Yes I kind of expected to see that response. I did see that issue posted elsewhere on the net. It's hard to believe that the driver issue make it past QA but then perhaps the QA process was extremely limited.
Had it been my PC, I would have stripped out all of the PCI cards and the extra video card and then proceeded from that point.

Postscript: maybe they felt bad, but they replied again to my support request and sent me another driver for the PCI card, with instructions to use it to "Update Driver."
How hard would it have been to include that in the installation software!???

Hi,
I would feel alone about some of these issues. USB 3 cards, SATA cards and other add in cards sometimes don't go through very rigorous QA. In short, slap dash testing.
I hope the driver works.
