My HP desktop is running real well but I would like to boot from an external USB hard drive in an emergancy and it is not supported in my bios.  There are two bios updates available but I don't know if they would add the USB boot function and I hate to do and update when I am not having any issues.  The bios descriptions to not show anything about USB booting.  Advise please and thanks in advance.

Hi! @RKB75, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you need to know how to boot from an external hard drive.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Please try the steps mentioned below.

Follow the steps below to configure the boot order on most computers.
Turn on or restart the computer.
While the display is blank, press the f10 key to enter the BIOS settings menu.
The BIOS settings menu is accessible by pressing the f2 or the f6 key on some computers.
Select the Advanced tab using the right and left arrow keys.
Use the up and down arrow keys to select Boot Order.
Follow the on-screen instructions to change the boot order to external hard drive.
Press F10 to save changes and exit.
Check if you are able to boot from the external hard drive.

Please let me know if this works!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

I really appreciate the prompt reply but I have already attempted changing the bios and I do not have any option for USB.  Thanks for trying!

@RKB75, thanks for the response.

Thanks for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned that you changed the settings in BIOS but the issue still persists.

I would suggest you update BIOS on your PC and check it makes any difference.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂
