HP TouchSmart Envy 20
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This started happening only yesterday. I came back home as usual and turned on the computer, realising I had forgotten to shut it down, so it was left running for the past 7 hours. When I got the computer out from sleep mode, I found out something odd. It didn't show the lock screen when it started. It was at the login screen, asking for the password. I tried to type in something. Nothing registered. The weird thing was that there was this laptop logo, with a "Caution" sign. Nothing was responding, not even the mouse nor the keyboard.

I was worried so I turned off the power switch, hoping that it would help. When I turned it back on and pressed the power switch, there's just this blue "HP" logo that shows up whenever it starts up, but this time, it's just stuck there. A black screen with the HP logo.

I tried various ways I found on the internet, such as

1) Removing all USB Devices, holding down the power button for 15 seconds, and turning it back on with the keyboard and mouse only.

2) Spamming the F10/F8/F2/Escape key hoping for the BIOS menu to appear. There was this tip that told me to spam F10 for around 8 seconds, press the down arrow key 3 times, then enter 2 times.

3) Clearing the dust away from the ventilation

4) Checking if the power from its supply to the computer itself is well.

But however, none of these ways appeared to work. It's as if the desktop is just frozen there, not responding to anything. I wanted to bring my PC to a repair shop to fix the USB holes, but it has run out of warranty.

Is there anything else that I can try out that may help with this situation?

=UPDATE=
I'm able to get to the Hewlett Packard Setup Utility, but I have no idea on what to do. I did attempt to do a Startup test, but it failed

Processor Check: PASSED
Memory Test: PASSED
Hard Disk SMART Check: PASSED
Hard Disk Short DST: FAILED

PCI Device Check: PASSED

FAILURE ID: PGE3KX-0007P5-MFPP1A-60TM03

PRODUCT ID: H4G65AA#AB4

=UPDATE #2=
Attempted to system recover (F11) through system startup. When I pressed F11, it brings me back to the blue company logo.

Attempted to find the recovery disc as well, but couldn't find it. Does it even come along with the purchasing of computers nowadays? I could only find a recovery disc that's for my HP Pavillion that I used 10 years ago

Hello @JetTheNewb,

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.

I understand that your computer displays a blue HP logo when starting up, but hangs on the screen. I would be happy to assist you in this matter!

Since the Short DST (Disk Self Test) indicated that it had failed, what this means is that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

Seeing as you mentioned that your computer is out of warranty, I will need to know what the product number of your All-in-One computer is to provide replacement instructions for you. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number.

How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

I look forward to your reply!

Hello @JetTheNewb,

Thank you for the quick reply!

To replace the Hard Drive on your computer, I recommend following the steps in this document on Replacing the Hard Drive in HP ENVY 20-d000 TouchSmart All-in-One Series Desktop PCs. This should help with removing the components necessary to replace the hard drive on your computer.

Once replaced, you can obtain recovery media for your system by following the steps in this resource on HP PCs - Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive.

To ensure a successful installation, please ensure that your replacement hard drive is equal to, or greater in size to the original drive.

Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

Regards 🙂

Before I start replacing the Hard Drive itself, I have a couple of questions.

1) Do I require a new Hard Drive, or can I reuse the old one. If I require a new one, where can I purchase some, and also what kinds should I purchase.

2) Other than the ESD, What other factors should I be cautious about when replacing the Hard Drive?

Hi again JetTheNewb,

It is good to hear back from you!

Since the old Hard Drive is failing, you will definitely need to obtain a new one. As I cannot recommend a specific drive, you can find a number of different models from one of the following vendors below:

https://www.google.com/search?q=hard+drive&oq=hard+drive&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i65l3j69i61j69i60.2447j...

Other than the ESD, the only things to keep in mind are to:

  • Use a Phillips head screwdriver.
  • Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
  • Transfer the computer to a clean, flat, stable work surface over a noncarpeted floor. It is recommended that you put down a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the screen from scratches or other damage.
  • Refrain from remove a component from its protective packaging until you are ready to install it.

I hope this helps!

Best Regards 🙂

I recently bought a new HDD, when i replaced it and booted it up

There was an error message that appeared

"Error: no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed."

I tried getting into the BIOS but it just shows the error in another line everytime I press F11

I did some reading up and realised that I need a CD to install the new Hard Drive, but I don't recall having or receiving one. Is there anything else I can do?
