Hello, I've got an HP Pavilion 18-5010 All-In-One desktop computer that all of a sudden one day it decided that the bottom half of the screen was going to stop working. It came from the factory with Windows 8. All of this happened when I upgraded to Windows 10 through Windows Update. The best way I can describe the way it looks is it looks like the bottom half is mirroring the top half, but it's so blurry, you really can't make out but just outlines. Now, when the computer goes to sleep, and you move the mouse to wake it up, when the screen comes back on the picture is fine, the bottom half is as it should be for about 3 seconds, then bam, the bottom half goes back out. Every time the bottom half goes out, you can hear an extremely high pitch sound coming from somewhere within the computer, Kind of sounds like a dog whistle sounds like in the movies, it's extremely high pitch. You hear the sound, then a little static on the screen then the bottom half does this. Also, the mouse disappears once you cross over that middle section. You can still click on things in the bottom half, just can't see what you're clicking on. .

First, I tried updating the graphics and monitor drivers, which in turn both procedures failed. So I then restarted and booted into the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, all of those tests claimed there were no faults. I went and started up the computer normally, and ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow and everything was OK. The last thing I've tried is erasing the entire hard disk and doing a clean install of Windows 10 with all drivers updated and this problem still persists. Oh, I've also taken it completely apart and it was full of dust. I did a good cleaning on it and checked all wires and connections and everything is now spotless and connected well. I have pics of what the screen looks like attached to this post. Please help.

Hi @SPC_Myers,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that your display is acting up shortly after starting, after installing Windows 10. I am happy to assist you with this.

Have you tried to start the system in Safe Mode to see if the same thing happens to the display?  HP PCs - Windows Safe Mode (Windows 10, 😎

Do you have a set of recovery media for your factory operating system installation?

Please let me know.

Yes I have booted in safe mode and it does the same thing. No recovery media, though. I did however get the copy of the clean install of Windows 10 from HP, where you can create an iso image of it from the new upgrade, then burnt it to a DVD disc. Now since I last posted, I did take the back panel off, while it was running, and the high pitch noise I was telling you about, when I removed the one 4gb memory card from it while turned on, the high pitch noise would stop. When you put the card back in, it once again does the same thing. Could this mean that there's a problem with the memory card? Please feel free to ask me anything, I will be happy to tell you. Thank you in advance for all the help.

EDIT: The Windows 10 I created didn't come from HP, it came from Microsoft. Thanks.

Thank you for the update, and if removal of that card causes that sound to go away, then either that module or the slot has a problem.  So if possible try the other slot, if you haven't already. If it works in one slot then the slot is bad, if the same thing happens with both slots, then it is probably a defective module.

When I put it in the other slot, the computer starts beeping, like it doesn't recognize it, or I guess it's supposed to have one in the top slot before youre able to add one to the bottom one.. I also have kept in mind that possibly the power supply may not be supplying adequate power? I've played with display settings, but I've noticed that there's only one setting for screen refresh rate, which is 60 Hz. There are no other options. Awaiting your next reply.

Since we know there is something going on with the memory, try a different memory module if you have one that is compatible, and see if that same high pitched noise occurs.

If it does then I would recommend that you contact HP phone support. Please use the following http://www.hp.com/contacthp and create a case for your issue and contact HP.
